About

We have around 30 members, with 8 affiliated members (12 women, 15 men). We are a financially sound group, relying on members’ donations; we do have occasional rentals (but I don’t have the details at this time). Our most notable centerprise is the Casa Matita charity, which relies on our group’s donations to fund a community of families in Mexico. One of our members, Mikail, lives there some of the time, and some of us visit at certain times of the year when there are celebrations. We donate school supplies and backpacks in September for the children, and provide Christmas presents in December. The children send us handmade cards with their requests, and then thank you cards after the events. Mikail always sends us great photos of the celebrations.

We hosted a Kedjiwaan Day around a year ago and plan to have another one soon. Around half the group fasted Ramadan this year and got together for Bapak talks on the Nights of Power, as well as Eid celebrations. We also participated in our annual Ramadan Work Party (which has now become a San Diego tradition), during which we work together to fix or enhance our Subud House. This year we painted it a beautiful blue color and fixed some ceiling tiles that were coming down. We are now also replacing a trellis and the deck in our garden – this with great help from two members who live in Orange County but come down regularly to San Diego.

Our satellite group in Vista hosts weekly Wednesday simultaneous latihans (quiet 6pm, latihan 6:15) followed by a potluck dinner. Sometimes we are 3 or 4, and sometimes 10 people. You never know, but it’s always stimulating. The San Diego group has regular Saturday latihans, after which we gather on our patio for coffee, tea, snacks, and chat. Both groups welcome visitors at all times, and lately we have seen the Shimas, Philip and Alexandra, and many others passing through.

We have an ample number of men helpers, but only one woman (since the other woman helper, Helena, has moved away).
