Remembering Lucia Ryan

Our dear sister, Lucia Ann Ryan, formerly of Saratoga, CA and Bainbridge Island, WA, passed away peacefully on October 17th, 2021. Born in Potsdam, NY in 1937, she was the mother of four children, whom she and her beloved husband, Dr. Keith Ryan, raised with love and laughter in their home in Saratoga.

Above: Lucia & Keith Ryan, 2007

Both Lucia and Keith were opened and became part of the Palo Alto Subud Center in 1991. Irena Olender, member of the Palo Alto Center, notes that they were both very engaged in center life, each serving two terms as treasurer, vice chair and chair; Keith was the driving force in the first major remodel to the building. Lucia also served as a helper at the Center. Lalia Helmer, Palo Alto Center member, fondly remembers Lucia’s wonderful, positive, and warm presence in all that she did.

Seeking a more peaceful environment than the Silicon Valley, the Ryans moved to Aptos for a year and during that time were members of the Santa Cruz Subud Center. They then settled into their new home on Bainbridge Island. For more than 10 years, they enjoyed being part of the Olympic Neighborhood Group of Subud PNW, whose members live on the island and in the nearby mainland town of Poulsbo.

In addition to her other Subud roles, Lucia served a term as a member of the Susila Dharma USA Board.

A 40th Day selamatan to mark her passing will be held at the Palo Alto Subud Center on Saturday, November 27, following the regular Saturday latihan (quiet time at 10:45).  A celebration of life will be held in December at Grace Church in Bainbridge Island, WA. If you wish to honor her memory, please consider a donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Alzheimer’s Association in Lucia’s name.

All who knew her will miss her and remember her loving and generous spirit with fondness.

If you’d like to share a memory about Lucia Ryan, you can do so at “Leave a Reply” comment box below.

Remembering Dainuri Rott

Dainuri Rott passed away on September 1, 2021. He was 72 years of age.

Dainuri was a true pioneer and inventor who helped start the development of electric-powered surfboards which continues to progress to this day. He was dedicated to adapting his work to offer new mobility to people with disabilities of all ages, particularly for veterans. A wonderful article about how these devices restore a sense of freedom and adventure to disabled people is available HERE.

Dainuri embraced the spiritual practice of Subud, participating as a active member of the Palo Alto Subud Center in recent years and as a co-founder of the Seven Circles Retreat Center in Badger, California. He was a regular member of a yoga studio and a Zen meditation center in Northern California.

He was also a dedicated husband and father to his three children. Let all who knew him send our thoughts and prayers as he moves on to his new journey.

Thanks to Paul Nelson and Doug Card for this remembrance. To share your own thoughts or memories of Dainuri, please use the comment box below.

Remembering Mark Sanelli

by Theo Salisbury

Dear sisters, and brothers,
Below is an obituary, or memorial remembrance, for our brother Mark Sanelli. I hope this is apt, is solemn, yet communicates some feeling, and will serve its purpose well enough on Mark’s behalf:

On Wednesday November 17th 2020 I received an email from Marlene Sanelli, sister of Mark Sanelli, to let me know that Mark had died that morning of lung cancer. Symptoms had first appeared in March, yet, she said, he had not expected to die when he did.  Mark had lived with his sister in San Jose for the last 20-25 years.

Mark (originally Bill) was of Sicilian ancestry, thin and dark, a heavy smoker. He was a Navy veteran and for a long time a long-haul truck driver. He was well-read, self-educated, and smart. Mark had been opened in 1970 in the Palo Alto Subud Center, when it was housed in the Human Institute (started by the late Husain Chung and Reynold Bean). I got to know Mark when he was an applicant and participated in his opening. He was one of the most honest and sincere people I ever met, though stubborn and sometimes uncompromising. He and I had an on-off relationship for years, yet I considered him a good friend.

He, along with my two sisters and me, had joined the Subud San Jose Center when, following Husain Chung’s lead, it spun off from the Palo Alto Center in the mid-to-late 1980s, before being reabsorbed about 4 years later. A few years after rejoining Subud Palo Alto, Mark received to be a helper. He went to the then-men-helpers and asked them to confirm his receiving through testing, which they did. He was officially approved by whomever was then approving helpers. But Mark’s attempts to work with the other helpers, or theirs with him, eventually failed. I only ever heard his side of the story, but suspect that both sides bore some responsibility for this failure.

I’m sad. I will miss Mark a lot, though I haven’t seen him in person since 2003, when he ably assisted me in doing latihan and testing on behalf of my brother, Winfield Salisbury II, who had been stricken with a burst brain aneurysm. Win had been opened not very many years before, but living in northeast San Jose had had little or no opportunity to participate in group latihan. Soon after my brother’s death, Mark had declared himself a regional member, and never after went to the Palo Alto Center for group latihan. He continued to think of himself as a helper, and so did I.

I ask all who feel so moved to dedicate prayers and latihans to Mark. Marlene suggested that anyone wishing to donate to a charity in Mark’s name could donate to the Audubon Society. Mark was a great bird lover.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Theodore Richard Salisbury,

The Meaning of Charity

Submitted by Philip Lindstrom, Chair, Subud CA at Palo Alto

Subud Palo Alto and Susila Dharma USA sponsored a fundraising event for Susila Dharma humanitarian projects on September 23. The idea started with Palo Alto’s desire to hold an event which would engage the group with a better understanding of the causes that Susila Dharma supports, rather than simply writing a check.

Enjoying social time before dinner.

As it was our first venture into “fundraising”, we had second thoughts about how it would come together, but managed to pull through because we had already sent out the invitations! We were very pleased when we had 36 in attendance and participation from several other centers.

The event started with latihan, where the women tested the meaning of charity. This was followed by social time and a delicious Indonesian buffet.

After dinner, we enjoyed brief presentations on several initiatives including:

  • Aminah Herrman, Chair of SD USA, highlighted “Kitchen Gardens,” a project being managed through a group of schools in India in which students learn to grow food to supplement their families’ diet.
  • Mardiah Tarantino encouraged people to connect with the Elderberry project to visit and support our ageing Subud community
  • Henrietta Haines gave an update on Walnut Creek’s Venezuela Relief project.

We raised $2,700 during the evening for Susila Dharma. To top it off, that amount is being matched by both the Palo Alto and Portland.

Aminah Herrman’s “Tree of Life,” sold at the auction, now graces the Subud Center in Santa Cruz.

The muscle behind the fundraising came from Benedict Herrman who led the Chinese auction. Many thanks to all who helped pull this off and special thanks to the Palo Alto organizing team including Alexandra Boyer, Doug and Lianne Card, Lalia Helmer, Irena Olender, Dennis and Manuel Oliver, Rifka Several, Elizabeth Trudell,  and Humphrey Williams.

SDUSA would welcome an invitation from centers to come visit and give a similar presentation. We hope that this type of grassroots fundraiser social may inspire events in other Subud communities.

Telling the Stories of Subud Palo Alto

Stories from Lusijah Sutherland:

There cannot be a complete history of Subud Palo Alto without mention of Husain Chung and the key role he had in establishing a large and vital Subud group in Palo Alto. He was a well-known leader in the human potential movement in the mid-1960s.  His psychodrama workshops were picked up by the Free U (a consortium of universities that offered free coursework to the community) and were widely attended.

Husain’s work was geared towards connecting with authentic self and soul.  Some participants wanted to know where he “got his juice” and followed him to Subud. Many people were opened; Husain estimated around 200.  The energy of the young people who had come through the Human Institute created tensions with other members.  A former member of Subud Palo Alto shared his perspective: “imagine young people being opened in Subud who had experienced the freedom and authenticity from Husain’s workshops. They were just too wild.” After complaints, Bapak told Husain that people who had been opened could no longer attend his workshops.

Bapak did acknowledge Husain and the influx of new members and also wanted to make sure there was no confusion; latihan was different than psychodrama.  Husain himself and many who came from the Human Institute were hurt by this decision and the ultimate result was the end of the Human Institute. Of those opened, some left, some stayed.  Among the people who stayed are members who have subsequently and continue to fill leadership roles in Subud in both regional and national roles.

Our building, an old renovated barn, was bought from an Asian Christian Church which held our mortgage until early 2000.

By 1975, the center was filled with young families, many with preschool age children.  The Subud House housed a Subud playschool, run by Halimah Van Tuyl, a gifted teacher. This experience certainly helped Subud members in Palo Alto to be better parents. We wanted to do things differently, to be better parents, informed by the latihan. We were all reading books about “I messages” and non-violent communication with our children. I saw fine examples of sensitive interaction between adults and children that was based on honoring of each child. I look back on this 40 years later, as extremely important in supporting how I would parent my children.

What was a group of young people in the mid-seventies has changed over the years as members and families moved away, moved in, and sometimes moved back to Palo Alto.  With the evolution of “Silicon Valley,” the membership became more professional, with members having skills that fit in with the exploding high tech industry. I remember going to Washington DC many years ago for a congress and those from Palo Alto were asked to characterize our group. It struck me then that the group is highly educated, there is a high level of creativity; members are innovative both personally and within the group, good problem solvers.  This is still true today.

The Subud house has been slowly improved over the years from its historic beginnings first as a barn and later a church in old Palo Alto.  The purchase price of the Subud house was around $40,000 in the early 1970s.  With the explosion of high tech driving the average sales price of real estate in Palo Alto today to more than 2 million dollars, we are very fortunate to have this house in one of the nicest parts of Palo Alto.

Stories from Lianne Card

Reynold Bean was chair of Subud California when the current house in Palo Alto was purchased around 1973.

There was a time when the group shrank partially because of the founding of Subud San Jose as a separate group. This was spurred by a large Filipino family, the Icasianos, who were all opened and who had a Victorian house in San Jose where the group first began meeting about 1983.  The San Jose group persisted for a period of about six years. During that time as I remember it, it was the Clarks and the Hills that kept things going in Palo Alto.

Then the San Jose group decided to give up the uncongenial space they were renting in a warehouse and merged back with the Palo Alto group. It was at that time that there was a conscious decision to acknowledge that the members lived in a wider geographical area than just Palo Alto. That was when the name Subud Santa Clara Valley was used for the group. This followed the practice of other groups taking the names of their counties e.g. Butte County, Marin County, and San Joaquin County.

After the fall of Saigon at the end of the Viet Nam war, Subud throughout the world sponsored the immigration of Vietnamese members. Many Vietnamese members settled in San Jose and for ten or fifteen years were a significant part of our group population. I have fond memories of Saturday morning latihans with as many as five elderly Vietnamese women in traditional dress attending. And our potlucks were wonderfully diverse with noodle dishes and Susan Trinh’s papaya salad.

Stories from Lalia Helmer

After paying off the original mortgage in 2000 and securing several loans from Subud CA, Subud Palo Alto proceeded with a series of renovations to the interior and exterior of the house. The most recent renovations have enabled the group to rent the house to several groups that offer music lessons, Spanish language, yoga and similar events. This greatly increased the revenue available for the maintenance of our house as well as provided the group with funds that could support charitable projects and to increase our support to Subud CA.

Subud Palo Alto General Meeting

Submitted October 2015 by Sylvia des Tombe, Secretary, Palo Alto Subud

The meeting was opened by an expression of happiness that so many were able to attend, and with a special welcome to Francisca Beach and her son Paul Garth, and also to Forest Conlon, new members to our Palo Alto group. Each of them is what Indonesians call “Antik Baru,” in other words, they are new to our group, but not to Subud.  Welcome!

We dove right into the matter of the vacant positions, with hope and confidence that this meeting would have results.   There were nominations, seconds, discussions, declarations of willingness, and even one speech.  Then there was testing, sharing of the results, and finally the modest retiring of the candidates before the members raised their hands to vote. Unanimity was total and absolute, and here are the results:

Positions                        New Office Holder(s)   Comments:

Chair, Philip Lindstrom A 2-year position with option to continue
Regional Councilor Dennis Oliver A legal 4-year position, involving attending 3 meetings a year and regional congresses. Thru this person, Subud PA can have a voice in use of regional funds and how we can help the region..
Property Committee Fatijah, Dainuri, Lalia & Dennis (rental coordinator) Indefinite; as long as willing, no doubt.

Sylvia des Tombe (yrs truly) said she was content in her role as Secretary, and then we asked Manuel Oliver about his role as Treasurer, as now he has taken on the added responsibility of being Treasurer for Subud California.  These were his words:  “If someone is super-psyched to jump in as local treasurer, that would be fine, but it is NOT URGENT.  If someone wants to help, great.”

Post-election discussion:

Irv said that, in his new position as Chair in his synagogue, he had profited much from his experience as Subud Chair.  He put forward a suggestion   that we practice “Audacious Hospitality.”  He attributes our relative weakness in our ability to socialize to our less-than-wonderful kitchen.  He believes that a great “gift to ourselves” would be to, for example, have a movable awning over the porch so that the area would be available, rain or shine.  Kenneth then noted that we could cut the wall back dividing the kitchen and the open area, put in a counter, and enjoy a more open plan, have more space. Being more audacious yet, he put forward the L.A. concept of celebrating birthdays on a monthly basis.

We adjourned to socialize after thanking Manuel for his excellent, thorough financial report and promising to discuss it in detail at the next Dewan meeting on November 3rd.

Palo Alto Center Report – May 2015

Membership and Latihan

The group has approximately 35 active members. Latihan gatherings occur on:

  • Saturday at 10:30am: Men 8-10; women 8-10
  • Monday at 8:00pm: Men 6-8; women 3-5
  • Thursday at 8:00 pm: Men 8-10; women 3-6

(Note: Several of our regularly attending members have been traveling  in the last couple of months, so attendance at latihan has been somewhat lighter).

Two women, Nancy Hunh and Regina Pohl, have recently been opened.  Alexandra Boyer has recently moved to the bay area and is now part of the group. There is one new woman applicant.

Changes to Members, Helpers and Committee

At the annual all-member meeting on February 28th, the group discussed what we’d like to work on together.  There was agreement on:

  • More structure and planning for group gatherings and social functions
  • Attention to facilitating the inner connections of the group
  • More frequent communications
  • Overall, increased engagement for all members

While no one was moved to stand for the position of Chair right now, several people volunteered and were approved by the group for other roles:

  • Manuel Oliver has the role of Treasurer
  • Elizabeth Trudell has the role of Secretary, and continues as Regional Councilor.
  • Sylvia des Tombe and Irena Olender have formed a committee to be responsible for social events..
  • Harfijah Oliver, Connie Habash, Irina Selvaretnam and Rosabelle des Tombe Lyneshave created a mailing list of Subud parents with young children and will work toward offering childcare during Saturday latihan on some recurring basis.
  • Dennis Oliver continues as Rental Coordinator

Life of the Center

The goal of having more social interaction is supported by several recent and planned events:

  • A gathering in the rose garden at the Center following latihan on April 4th included an Easter egg hunt for subud kids, plus snacks and socializing.
  • An evening of poetry and music sharing on Friday, May 1st was organized by Emmanuel Williams. It was a very lovely gathering of about 15 people.  Highlights included:
  • Hania read several of his own stories based on the 19th century  folklore compilation called “Junior Brown” and a Rumi poem
  • We all recited Lewis Caroll’s “Jabberwocky” loudly together with great expression
  • Lianne read her recently published poem “The Wild Parrots of Sunnyvale.”
  • Sodan and Herbert played guitar and sang original songs they had composed
  • Emmanuel led some theater games
  • We all sang “Amazing Grace.”
  • Amelia displayed her most recent mosaics

We hope to repeat the event in later in the year.

On May 2 following latihan, the ladies had a mini keji day. Alexandra offered some testing about how we worship—when each of the forces is present, then how it is when they are all in harmony and we are worshiping in our daily life, and finally how it is when we worship free from the forces and are completely surrendered.

  • A movie night is being organized for early June, by Duny Castaneda. This will follow a similar format of an event last year, with the movie being shown in the Subud hall and discussion to follow.
  • An evening potluck is planned for the summer solstice on Sunday, June 21, which will be an opportunity to recognize Bapak’s birthday. It is during Ramadan, so some people will be breaking fast; it is also father’s day.
  • Sylvia des Tombe has initiated a series oflessons in the Indonesian language which have been taking place on some Saturdays after latihan.

Financial Status

Income and Rental

Rental income continues to be solid.  Average monthly income for 2015, including member pledges and rental is running ahead of 2014 average.  The rental space is quite solidly booked now, so we have likely reached a stability point that we hope to be able to maintain.

The group has begun discussing the next major maintenance project for the hall.

Donations and Pledges

  • The dewan agreed to offer matching funds up to $200 for any member donations to support scholarships to Camp Badger. A total donation of $400 will be made.
  • The monthly pledge to the Region was increased to $500 in April.

Palo Alto Subud Center Update – February 2015

by Elizabeth Trudell, Regional Councilor, Palo Alto

Membership and Latihan

The group has approximately 35 active members.  Latihans occur on:

  • Saturday at 10:30am: Men 8-10; women 8-10
  • Monday at 8:00pm: Men 6-8; women 3-5
  • Thursday at 8:00 pm: Men 8-12; women 4-6

The men have strong attendance at both evening latihans but the women’s evening latihan has been more lightly attended in recent months. Some discussion has occurred about ways to assess whether any adjustment to timing or frequency of latihan should be considered to encourage more people to attend.

Changes to Members, Helpers and Committee

The woman’s helpers have been meeting with two prospective members and we hope to celebrate their openings by the end of the month.

An all-member meeting is scheduled after latihan on February 28th with the goal of identifying filling open committee roles, as well as information sharing about center and regional activities and finances. We will be joined by several regional and national helpers.

Life of the Center

Kejiwaan

On January 17, the Palo Alto Center helpers hosted a day of latihan and testing. All Subud California members were invited to attend via an invitation sent to the SubudCalEvents list and we were delighted that six members from Monterey, two from Santa Cruz and one from Sacramento came for the day. In the testing following the regularly scheduled latihan, the theme of forgiveness of self and others was especially powerful for the women.

There was a break for a bountiful potluck lunch which was the opportunity for lively discussion.  After lunch, many people stayed for further latihan.

With such strong participation, and the engagement of members from other groups, the Palo Alto center is planning to host kejiwaan days on a monthly basis, on the first Saturday of the month.  This will start in April, as many of our helpers are planning to attend the gathering in Sacramento on the first weekend in March.

Indonesia Language Lessons

Sylvia des Tombe has initiated a series of lessons in the Indonesian language which have been taking place since the end of January, on Saturdays after latihan, when the upstairs of the Subud house is free.

Our group has had several in-depth conversations about the use of language in recent months. The key question is whether the usefulness of words such as “dewan” and “kejiwaan,” which provide a precise meaning for Subud activities, is countered by their unfamiliarity for people from western cultures. The lessons are providing an opportunity for interested members to learn more about the larger context of the Indonesian language and to be more prepared to visit Indonesia should the opportunity arise.

Dewan

The dewan has been gathering for a latihan and meeting on the second Tuesday of each month.  This has been very helpful in keeping the group connected and helping to identify and address needs, opportunities and issues.

Financial Update

Revenue from hall rentals continues to be solid, with strong increases in 2014 due to changes and additions to renter community.

Member contributions increased somewhat in 2014 as well.  In support of the Connections Campaign, a pledge outreach is happening in February and March, in context with the all-member meeting at the end of February.

Our dewan has decided to increase the monthly pledge to Subud CA to $500, as we are currently seeing a good balance of income and expenses which enables us to continue ongoing maintenance to the hall as needed.

Kedjiwaan Day in Bay Area

On January 17, the Palo Alto Center helpers hosted a day of latihan and testing. All Subud California members were invited to attend via an invitation sent to the SubudCalEvents list and we were delighted that six members from Monterey, two from Santa Cruz and one from Sacramento came for the day.

In the testing following the regularly scheduled latihan, the theme of forgiveness of self and others was especially powerful for the women.

There was a break for a bountiful potluck lunch which was the opportunity for lively discussion.  After lunch, many people stayed for further latihan.

It was a great day! With such strong participation, and the engagement of members from other groups, the Palo Alto dewan is planning to host kedjiwaan days on a more frequent basis.

Palo Alto Subud Center- August 2014 Update

Submitted by Elizabeth Trudell, Palo Alto Regional Councilor & Treasurer

It was a busy period with Ramadan and two Subud congresses.  During Ramadan, members of the group met during two of the nights of power for latihan and to watch Bapak videos.

At least 16 members from Palo Alto attended the World Congress in Puebla. A potluck gathering, held at the Clark home on August 23rd to share reactions and information about the World Congress, was attended by more than 40 members from the Palo Alto, Berkeley, Santa Cruz and other centers. There were discussions about Congress events including the Conversation Cafe on the Future of Subud, the new hall built by the Washington Center, the Success and the Subud Experience Panels and many more.

Several Palo Alto members attended the Regional Congress in Joshua Tree over Labor Day weekend, enjoying fellowship and latihan with members from California and beyond. The Regional Councilor’s meeting held during the Congress focused on the needs of the centers and options for improving the financial health of the region.

Changes to Members, Helpers and Committee

  •  Lianne Card and Kenneth Clark have become National Helpers.
  •  Irena Olendar has completed her term as Regional helper and returned as a local helper
  •  Irina Selvaretnam has become a helper candidate for the Center.

The committee continues to operate without a chair.  The dewan meets monthly to discuss issues and needs, and many members give their time and oversight to maintain the structure and grounds. This supportive structure has allowed the group to manage effectively with a small committee.

Finances and Maintenance

Revenue from rentals continues to be solid, and the mortgage was retired in April.  Our Dewan decided to increase the monthly pledge to Subud CA after retiring the mortgage, and added the MR&R fund. We hope to continue to grow this over the next few years to provide a resource for major structural maintenance which may be needed in the future.

We have recently learned that the roof of our building needs repair, and are seeking bids for repair or replacement prior to the winter rainy season.

Some new renters have joined the community in the last few months, including one that has committed to a weekly slot for most of 2015.  We are beginning to reach capacity for the rental times available in the hall. Rental revenue continues to be vital to our financial health, although managing the renter requires time and attention.

Palo Alto Center life, May 2014

The men are continuing to meet after latihan about once a month for an informal discussion group. They took advantage of unusually warm weather one Monday evening in May to gather outside on the upstairs deck of the Palo Alto center.

Members gave generously to match the initial donation of $300 and we were able to send a donation of $600 which will  support scholarships for two children to attend Camp Badger at Seven Circles this summer.

A rental community page has been added to the Palo Alto Subud website with brief profiles of several of our renters.  We hope this will eventually include all our rentals and provide new connections between renters and  members.

Subud Events

Center members Irena Olender, Doug Card, Lianne Card and Humphrey Williams attended the Helpers Retreat in Los Angeles

Lianne Card and Emmanuel Williams attended the National  Congress in Pittsburg. Fatijah Clark graciously volunteered to attend as our official delegate, but was unable to attend due to family illness, so Michael Menduno carried our proxy vote.

Subud California Assists Local Centers with Web Redesign

Subud California at Palo Alto launched a glamorous new website in April (http://paloalto.subudcalifornia.org ) ,  rich with many new features such as an online Paypal donation button, a member page, with links to websites of members, and a collection of member art. Over time, this can expand to include information about art, activities or  enterprises from other Palo Alto members. There is also a renter community page, showcasing the use of the hall for music, yoga, movement, meditation and other spiritual practices. There are also plans to create a mirror site with the Spanish translation. Lianne Card, Stephanie Ferreira, Naomi Onaga and Elizabeth Trudell, were members of the web team that designed, wrote content and built site, together with the local committee, and Elizabeth Baskin has taken over as web master leading the web team.

Leonard Robel at Subud California at Marin has also taken over as webmaster, and is in the process of creating a beautiful redesign of the center’s website. The website is in the final stages of setting up the donation page before it is launched.  Check http://marin.subudcalifornia.org soon for the new website.

The two websites were built on Weebly, a web building tool that makes it easy to create a clean, contemporary design, without knowledge of html or programming languages.  This makes it much easier for members of centers to add content and modify the website over time. Weebly designs also adapt to mobile devices easily, and has good search engine optimization. Weebly had been chosen by Palo Alto and Marin, based on the needs of the centers and after comparison of various web building systems.

Both sites use new subdomains of the Subudcalifornia.org domain (e.g, marin.subudcalifornia.org), which the region has provided as a free service to the centers.

Subud California at Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and Arcata have also expressed interest in working with the regional web team to revamp or create new websites, and will be working with local webmasters including Leo Horthy and Michael O’Connor (Los Angeles) and Derek Choice (San Diego) and other members of local committees.

The regional web/tech team includes Mike Scirocco, Henry Couden, Naomi Onaga, and Andrew Morgan, as well as Mathias Dussain and Jeff Stone, with Philip Lindstrom and Lucas Hess.
