A Message from the Regional Chair

by Hanafi Fraval

One of the first goals Levana and I have set for ourselves is to visit all the Subud California centers. Our hope is to meet as many members as possible and understand each center’s successes, challenges, and aspirations. Visit are scheduled to Sacramento and Marin on October 8- 9, and to Sonoma and Santa Cruz on October 22-23. We plan visits later to San Diego, Palo Alto and Arcata.

We also want to share a vision of where we are now as a Region, what we need to do immediately and over the coming two or three years, and how to look at the next five or more years if we are to be in healthy and sustainable state.

We very much look forward to visiting you all.

NOTE: Our four new Regional Committee members were announced in August and September. If you missed those messages, you can review their brief biographies HERE

Elna Cooke to Serve as Regional Secretary

Elna Cooke has agreed to serve on the Subud California Executive Committee as Secretary, effective September 2022. Having served a partial team as Regional Secretary previously, plus a full term as Regional Helper from 2014-2018, she brings a broad understanding of the responsibilities of the Regional Committee and the needs of members across California to her new role.

Elna was opened in Aspen, Colorado in September, 1972. After becoming a local helper in 1985, while living in Europe, she moved to LA in 1986. She has been a helper at the LA Subud Center since that time, except when serving in Regional roles.

An artist, designer, Elna taught college fashion design classes for fifteen years and also managed two properties in LA. After living for a year in Keaau on the Big Island, Hawaii, she has returned to California and is now living in Laguna Beach

She is looking forward to working with this lovely team as part of the Regional Committee!

Hamilton Chaffee to Serve as Regional Treasurer

Hamilton Chaffee was appointed to the Subud California Regional Executive Committee as Treasurer in September, 2022.

A long time member of the Sacramento Subud Center, he served as Regional Councilor for Sacramento from 2015 to 2017, as well as for a prior term. Having also served as Regional Treasurer for Subud California in a prior term, he brings a wealth of experience to the role.

After gaining his BA from Stanford and MA from UCLA, Hamilton’s career has included overseeing the development and operation of large scale information technology systems, both financial and operational. His broad experience in strategic planning, system design, and project management includes leadership positions in a wide spectrum of healthcare operations organizations in areas such as workman compensation, health insurance, managed care, disability services, HMO’s and clinical communications services.

During his term as Treasurer for the Region, he hopes to help in the transition of Subud California to a more stable financial foundation.

Looking Back on 3 Years

by Luqman Katz, Chair of Subud CA, August 2019-August 2022

How to look back on the past 3 years as Chair of Subud CA? It has been at times fun, intense, and frustrating…but always rewarding for all of us involved. I’m reminded of the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” as we’ve had over the course of the 3 years the following:

  • 14 Center Councilors
  • 9 Regional Helpers
  • 5 Exec Comm members
  • 4 Administrators
  • 3 Tech teamers
  • and a partridge in a pear tree

This says a lot about the commitment to our Association of these Sisters and Brothers (I’m not counting the partridge ;-). Through it all we all emphasized our reliance on the Latihan and the intent to follow God’s guidance for each of us.

The following excerpt of a Bapak talk given in Semarang 29 December 1969, encapsulates the past 3 years in which we all had the honor to serve our Association:

“In fact, Subud is the members; that is, all of you. Therefore what we call Subud or Susila Budhi Dharma is nothing other than all of you. If you remember this – the fact that Subud is you and that you are Subud – and if you want Subud to progress well, to be secure and peaceful and to become an association of people who truly worship God with their body and soul, then there will not be any responsibility you refuse. You will be willing and you will do whatever is needed. So it is clear that it is you who are the most important, because you are Subud; and the most important thing in your life is to worship Almighty God – the path you have received”

Amen, and thank you everyone for allowing all 35 of us to serve you over these past 3 years,

Levana Fraval, Vice Chair, Subud California

Levava Fraval was elected as Vice-Chair of Subud California at the 2022 Regional Congress.

She was opened in 1977 and has served Subud as a committee member, center helper, and regional helper. She is a former trustee on the Board of Trustees of the Subud USA Archives Committee, and has been the West Coast national liaison for MSF since April 2019.

Levana has a background in graphics and book publishing. While a member of Subud New York, she was part of an earlier team working on Subud Writers International. She and husband Hanafi co-produced The Entrepreneur, an SES newsletter, during his first tenure as chair of SES USA, from 1996–2000. Levana served as co-chair of SES USA during the first two terms.

She comes from a family that managed investments and so has a strong sense at a fundamental level of what works and what does not. To that point, she believes foremost that in a Subud enterprise, it is the entrepreneur(s) in whom we invest. The trust engendered by that individual is what can move us to consider investing in their project. It is their growth and development, their level of personal responsibility, discipline, persistence and experience that increases the faith that our investment will be looked after and will have the potential to bear fruit.

Hanafi Fraval, Chair, Subud California

Hanafi Fraval is the current Chair of Subud California, having been elected at the 2022 Regional Congress.

Hewas opened 56 years ago at Coombe Springs, England. He has been both a center helper and a national helper. He has served Subud in numerous capacities, including as current and former (1996 – 2000) chair of SES USA. He is currently a member of Subud California at Los Angeles.

Hanafi has a creative approach with strong development expertise and financial abilities. He holds a bachelor degree in electrical engineering and a master’s in physics (electro-optics and laser science). He has spent the past 15 years on environment-positive technologies, such as novel low-energy building materials and biomass waste-to-energy conversion. He has worked as a business consultant and property developer, and has founded and sold two high-tech companies. He later held the position of CEO in a London-listed public company in the UK, operating a chain of nursing homes. There he developed a blueprint for a novel senior-living concept.

While living in the UK, Hanafi was the CEO of Anugraha, the International Center that Subud built, but was unable to keep due to cost overruns. He was also a board member of the Subud UK enterprise development company, Sinar Enterprise Development (SED), for 12 years.

Kejiwaan retreat brings deep focus on latihan and testing at 2022 Congress

by Rifka Several, 2022 Congress Chair

The regional congress team, along with most of the regional committee and council, were able to meet in person on June 10-12, thanks to the hosting of Subud CA at Santa Cruz. This was a “kejiwaan retreat” to become more centered on what is needed by our members at the upcoming Regional Congress in Santa Barbara.

It may be no surprise that testing suggested spending less time during the congress on reports and more time on testing, both to deepen our personal latihan experience and strengthen our feeling of community as we start to emerge from Covid isolation. We were truly able to feel the content of the congress theme: “deepening our surrender together.”

I always feel that that sharing information is vital, so any reports not presented during the Congress will be recorded for access by all members. We will use the time usually scheduled for these reports to test questions being developed by our regional helpers on topics such as our personal quiet, surrender and courage.

Due to the pandemic, our current regional committee has already served a “bonus year,” so we will witness candidate testing and participate in the election of our Subud California chair and vice chair. Please consider pre-testing about putting your name forward for these positions – either with local helpers or contact regional helpers to test with you. It is an act of courage, for sure, to put your name forward, but congress testing will confirm the reality, so why not experience it?

I and all the members of the Congress committee are deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to experience this testing and incorporate the results into a schedule tuned to our needs across the Region. We look forward to being together with you at Congress.

Message from the Chair

by Luqman Katz, August 2021

Fresh off our all-encompassing Congress, we hope you are all doing well. We traveled to our local centers, to the nation, and on to Indonesia, all from the comfort of our home. Now, post Congress, things are beginning to unfurl…

Raina Snyder has become our regional SIHA (Subud International Health Association) representative. She hopes to contact all of us to share the work that SIHA does, and how we can get involved with the Subud health and medical community. As a starting point, she recommends viewing the SIHA website and you can reach her at rainasnotaryservices@yahoo.com.

We thank Ralph Davila, Sanderson Morgan, and Paul Nelson for bringing SICA to California. SICA will have a larger presence in our region, as the SICA board hopes to bring latihan, testing, and conversation on the topic of culture and you, as well as cultural entertainment evenings. Stay tuned for an event coming near you.

Below, we present to you some members of your sweet, sincere and hard-at-it executive committee:

What adorable people they are! I know that I would definitely trust them with my donations to Subud CA, and I am sure you all feel the same way. Please visit our website and click on the donate button. You will make these little guys very happy and will make their jobs a lot easier. Thank you all!

Love, Your Committee

Meet Christian Stepien

We welcome Christiain Stepien as the new vice chair for Subud California:

I have been a spiritual seeker all my life. In my early years, I dabbled in Theosophy and Gurdjieff, and it was through the latter that I heard about a group of people that could experience some kind of intense direct spiritual force. Intrigued, I found John Bennet’s book “Concerning Subud”, devoured it, and then tracked down the closest group I could find, which was in Indianapolis (I lived in Cleveland at the time).

I was opened by Simeon Rodgers and Reynold Feldman in 1990. I soon became a Congress regular, and traveled to Subud World Congresses in Columbia, Bali, Spokane, Austria and New Zealand, as well as zonal congresses in Holland and Brazil. I was a long-time member of the Seattle group, and since 2001, with the Santa Barbara group. I have been a local helper since 2003.

My outer life for the past 20 years has been consumed with running the software company Experlogix, which I built from the ground up and sold in 2019. I retired this year in February, and my life changed from extreme enterprise intensity to very laid back. I now enjoy daily walks on the beach and trails with my wife Melissa, who is also a helper, and our dog Cody.

Message from the Chair

By Luqman Katz, Chair, Subud California

A  LETTER TO YOU THE 456 (CA Membership)

Good Morning, Subud CA.  Occasional and active members, you are all appreciated and loved.

Can you hear that? It’s the sound of our Centers reopening for in-person latihans, slowly and carefully! The proverbial light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. This is great and welcome news.

Talking about welcome news, I would like to introduce you to two members who are joining our CA Dewan. Christian Stepien is taking over the position of Vice Chair. He is replacing Raphaela who has stepped down….Thank you, Raphaela, for your work as our Vice Chair.

Daniel Jackson will be replacing the departing Owen as one of our three men Regional Helpers.  Owen will be hard to replace, but Daniel is up to the task….Thank you, Owen, for always being there for us.

In addition, Subud CA at Santa Cruz has elected Ralph Davila as their Regional Councilor.  Ralph is also a member of the SICA-USA board and brings many years of experience to the Council.  As we move closer toward a pandemic free life, we have a full Regional Council.

Thank you, Christian, Daniel, and Ralph!  We are blessed to have these willing and very capable members step forward in service to Subud CA.

Thank you everyone and see you all at the 2021 Regional Congress 2021 on Aug. 6-8th. All the best to each of you,

Luqman and the Gang

Regional Committee Changes

a message from Luqman Katz, Chair of Subud California

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
We hope you are all doing well and excited about beginning to be with each other as Centers start to reopen.

Some history we want you to have:  over the last couple of months, the Committee has been thinking of Ibu Rahayu’s advice to WSA, “be patient, continue to work and follow health guidelines and it is appropriate to make adjustments for health and safety needs.”  We were also thinking about the precedent set by WSA and SUSA, which both postponed their elections.  Additionally, we had concern about how testing for Chair and Vice Chair would actually work via Zoom at our virtual Congress this coming August.

Therefore, in March, the Executive Committee asked to do testing with our regional helpers on these questions:
a) Do I have the capability and ability to continue to serve for one more year?
b) How would it be for the Region if I were to continue to serve for one more year?

For Hasan and myself, our receiving was similar, as it was for the helpers…we felt a lightness, laughter, work and gratefulness. This was also true in the receiving of how it would be for the Region.

Jane received that it would be perfectly fine to continue as secretary, but if someone were moved and qualified to fill this role, they should step forward and contact the Executive Committee.

Following this testing, we asked the Regional Councilors to gather input from their members about the extending the Committee’s term until summer 2022 when, presumably, we can be together in person for testing and elections.  At our Council Meeting, 4/7/21, the Councilors unanimously voted to extend the term of the Committee by one year to 2022.

After much soul searching, our wonderful Vice Chair, Raphaela Riparetti, has decided it is best for her to step down from her role. Needless to say, she will be missed. Anyone interested in filling her position is invited to contact us. The Council will vote to confirm Raphaela’s replacement to complete the remainder of her term.

So, there it is, the work continues!  We have openings for interested members to work on various committees, including and especially, as Congress Chair for 2022. Your Councilor has a job description. (I hear it is a lot of fun😁).

With love,
Luqman and the Committee

Need a Smile?

Jayla’s vision

During this time when we are all covered with smoke while in the midst of a pandemic, your Regional Committee is thinking about you. We hope that the images from these young artists will bring a smile or four to us all,

Everyone please take care,

2020 Annual General Meeting Report

Thanks to Almighty God, and the work of a dedicated team of volunteers, Subud California hosted the first “virtual” regional gathering, attended via Zoom and conference call by over 215 brothers and sisters. Our Regional Helpers received the theme “Inner Peace and Outer Joy” last year, and how appropriate it is for our situation now!

The Annual General Meeting chair, Rifka Several, opened with words from Ibu Rahayu regarding the pandemic:

“Never put aside the power of God which is in each one of you. In truth, God loves all creatures, and will always protect, lead, and guide each one of you. Therefore, strengthen your worship of Almighty God. May God be just and loving”.

Our regional helpers provided their own prayers for us, our Gathering, and our Region:

“As we begin this time together, let us remember that we are in the holy presence of God, through which we find our inner peace and outer joy.

Almighty God, may we bring the fruits of our latihan into our daily lives so we may discover and know and live in our own unique potential guided by the power of God.  Please help us to grow in compassion, courage and commitment to be the person God created us to be.

May we each find in our hearts the understanding of the important things in life. May we feel compassion and empathy for those who are suffering and for those who are less fortunate. May we show kindness to our brothers and sisters, may we show tolerance for those we do not understand. May we have courage! Courage to use our voice when something must be said and courage to follow our guidance to the best of our ability, with faith and trust that our guidance is true and benefits not only ourselves but also those around us. May the latihan guide us and may we continually ask, “Is this the life that God has given me?

May God continue to bless all of our Subud Brothers and Sisters, and may our latihan continue to reveal God’s magnificence and glory.  May we all be full of love and good will towards each other and show all of humanity the results of our Latihan and our sincere surrender to the will of God.”

Regional Helper (RH) Report (see full report here):

According to the Subud USA census, Subud California has 543 members, 74 active helpers and 14 groups. When the RHs surveyed the groups, fewer than 543 are able to connect weekly with latihan.

The RHs made center visits prior to the pandemic to centers in San Diego, San Joaquin Valley and Santa Cruz.

The Region has expressed appreciation that regional latihans via conference call were quickly set up for Saturday mornings, usually followed by group test questions. Some local groups also have conference call latihans. The RHs are meeting virtually with candidate members and helpers. A greater outreach is being done to members not connected to a group, working with regional member council representative Rohana LoSchiavo.

Regional Chair Report. Luqman Katz, expressed his hope that we would be able to meet together in person soon. He thanked the membership for being able to serve for the past year, quoting Bapak that “service is not for the benefit of Subud, but for the benefit of you yourselves.” There are several service opportunities in Subud California: members are needed for the Property Management, Congress Development, and Community Resources committees.

Luqman outlined the quick action the regional committee had to take after the Covid-19 regulations went into place: the centers who have properties had to close them to renters and latihan attendance, and centers who rented facilities were not able to attend in-person latihans. After collaboration with our insurance company, center reopening protocols were developed and an attendance liability waiver form distributed.

Executive Director Report. Henrietta Haines, has focused on how to support the eight groups with properties and all members in the region. For protection with our insurance, it is important for members to follow the state and county guidelines and complete the required liability waivers.

Zone 7 Report Uraidah Hassani, reported with a PowerPoint presentation (view full report). Zone 7 comprises Canada, Mexico, USA, Cuba and Suriname and has 2000 members, 495 helpers, 23 properties and 46 rental spaces. She shared that the World Subud Association’s current topics are:

  • Financial stability for Subud
  • Wings being more active and connected
  • Permanent locations for the Archives
  • Support for Subud Cuba
  • Increased youth involvement

Please see the presentation for more details, including a full description of the World Subud Association organizational structure and aims, current projects, and the 2020 budget.

National Helper liaison Reports – Michal Brownell, Benjamin Boyce, and Sofia Nicoletti attended the Gathering and reported on their activities, much changed since the pandemic. They offer monthly conference call national latihans and support regions, the wings, and Subud USA. They have streamlined the National Care Support Program offering emergency financial assistance to members (applications and donations can be made at info@subudusa.org).

Subud USA Reports – Lucas Boladian, Subud USA Chair, and Philip Lindstrom, Vice-Chair, attended and reported. National donations continue to support Subud USA, and we are able to continue our Zone 7 and World Subud Association pledges. The new Subud USA directory is available electronically or in print. The Tucson, AZ Archives are moving to the National Office in Beltsville, MD. Subud USA also oversees Elderberry, a project to support and connect with older Subud members. A virtual national Annual General Meeting is planned for early November.

REGIONAL COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Financial Report (Hasan MacNeil, Regional Treasurer): The loss of rental income affected centers’ ability to repay their regional loans. These are being suspended where necessary, and in some cases, centers receive a $5000 regional “Covid-19 Emergency Loan” to cover expenses. The Region is here to help.

Property Management Committee (Denise Jackson): She is a “committee of one” and asks additional members to join who have experience in buildings and property management. (See Center property reports here). A lot of repairs and deferred maintenance was accomplished prior to the Covid-19 closures.

Community Resources Committee (Elizabeth Trudell, Henry Couden, and Halimah Collingwood): This very active committee would like additional members interested in writing, editing and websites, as they oversee:

  • Regional e-newsletter
  • Regional email contacts
  • Subud CA document archives
  • Regional website

The Committee has secured DocuSign to obtain electronic document signatures for the required liability waivers.  Invitations to sign electronically will be sent in September. Future projects include curating the Subud CA archives and revising the Center Handbooks, as resource permit. (Click here for the Community Resources Committee presentation.)

Congress Development Committee (Dennis Oliver, Chair): This experiment in holding a “virtual” Subud event has gone well in terms of planning and presentation. While we had planned to meet this month at UC Santa Barbara, this has been deferred until at least 2021. Given the plusses of not having to travel and allowing wider member attendance, we will aim to plan for more virtual events even when restrictions are lifted.

CENTER REPORTS

The Regional Helpers contacted all centers asking helpers to give a report. Click here to see the highlights.

The Subud California Annual General Meeting 2020 adjourned with thanks for the Gathering Team:

Luke Jones, Haryanti Jones, Dennis Oliver, Elizabeth Trudell, Rifka Several, Halimah Collingwood, Henrietta Haines, Raphaela Riparetti, Hasan MacNeil, Luqman Katz and our regional helpers Rasjidah Franklin, Helena Mertens, Renata Reid, Owen Riparetti, Hani’a Abram and Harlan Gleeson.

We wish you all INNER PEACE AND OUTER JOY!

The Congress Chair serves a one-year term and attends Council meetings as a non-voting member.

  • Secretary: Participate in and report the decisions of the Council through minutes of the meetings.  May also have oversight for committee and council meeting logistics meetings, preparing and distributing documents, etc.

Treasurer: Provide direction for the Region’s financial needs.  Develop fundraising programs, recommendations for budget allocations, and long term financial planning.  Provide support and guidance to center and group treasurers as needed.

Meet the New Regional Vice-chair

by Raphaela Riparetti

After an applicant period of well over a year, I was opened at a UK national Congress in Bideford during the summer of 2000. Never during this time of waiting did I have any doubt that Subud was for me and that has remained the case these last 19 years. My parents were in Subud a number of years before I joined but never told me anything about it nor did they bring my siblings and me to any Subud events. This seems to be related to the fact that as children and young adults they both were forced by their families into pretty tight religious straight jackets.

Therefore, they decided to give their kids utter religious/spiritual freedom, to the point that this part of life was hardly mentioned (but the content of their spirituality expressed in loving parenting!). It’s interesting to note here that my most astonishing and life-changing experiences in Latihan have been very directly Christ related which, despite the different form, has given me a real sense of closeness to my strict protestant lineage. Life is very comical that way.

I’ve been a part of the Amsterdam, Lewes, Brighton, Central London, Rungan Sari, Utrecht, and now Santa Barbara groups. I met my husband, Owen Riparetti, at the Innsbruck World Congress and we now have 2 daughters, Alexandra (6) and Halima (very nearly 5). I served as group chair in Utrecht, and have been a helper in Santa Barbara the last few years.

Soon after moving to CA in 2009, I once organized a Subud CA congress at Joshua Tree together with Harlan Gleeson and a number of others, which was a blast. By the time the congress came around, I remember experiencing such a feeling of bliss, and when I looked off into the desert sky through the wall of the Latihan hall, I saw Bapak and his party approaching. It was an incredible blessing to have those experiences.

I thank God for everything I have been allowed to receive on my journey through life with the help of the Latihan. These gifts are extraordinary and it is hard to paraphrase what exactly I am grateful for because it is so endless and multifaceted. Because of all of this, it is easy to find the willingness to serve the Subud CA community in my newly accepted role as vice-chair. I am asking for all the Divine help that will be needed to do a good job at the tasks that will come on my path!

Regional Committee Roles

Have you been present at a Subud California Regional Congress when members were chosen to serve for two-year terms in the roles of Regional Chair and Vice-Chair? Have you wondered what their responsibilities on the Regional Council are or thought about taking such a role yourself? If so, you’ll want to read on, and also pre-test with your local helpers about this possibility.

Talking with people who have served as officers or in other roles on the Regional Council makes it clear that the experience offers many opportunities for personal growth and for making new connections. Council members meet people from across the Region, see how the Region supports Subud CA’s centers and groups on both the material and spiritual level, and gain an understanding of how the Region interacts with the Subud wings and Subud USA. To get some sense of the work of the Council, see the report on the 12/8/2018 council meeting here.

Below are brief job descriptions from the Region’s bylaws, which offer some sense of the official duties. However, the best way to find out more is to talk with a current ot recent Chair (e.g. Robert Mertens, Renata Reid, Philip Lindstrom) or Vice-chair (e.g. Matthew Cooke, Elizabeth Trudell, Johanna Schor) to get their perspectives.

Chair: The Regional Chair shall have, in consultation with the Regional Council, general supervision, direction and control of the business and affairs of the Corporation. He or she shall preside at Regional Committee meetings, and at the meetings of the Regional Council, shall represent Subud California at meetings of the Subud USA Board of Directors and serve as the Regional delegate at Subud USA National Congresses. The Regional Chair shall have other powers and duties as may be described by the bylaws of the Corporation, or the Regional Council or the Regional or Special Congress may prescribe.

Vice-Chair: In the absence or disability of the Chair, the Vice-Chair shall perform all duties of the Chair. The Vice-Chair shall have such other powers and duties as the Chair, the Regional Council, or Congress may prescribe.

Subud CA Regional Council Meeting, February 2016, at the Santa Cruz Center

The Chair and Vice Chair also work with the Executive Director and the Region’s standing committees for Property Management, Congress Development, and Community Development, who provide continuity for the administration of the Region over time.

The Region’s bylaws list the key purposes of Subud California, as overseen by the Regional Council (also known as the Board of Director):

“The specific and primary purposes for which this corporation is formed are:

  1. To provide for the worship of God and the Spiritual growth of its members in accordance with the principles and practices of Susila Budhi Dharma.
  2. To engage in religious, charitable and educational work which in the opinion of its Board of Directors is appropriate to the achievement of the religious and spiritual purpose of the corporation.
  3. In addition to said specific and primary purposes, this corporation shall have the following purposes or powers, namely: to establish and provide for the conduct of assemblies and meetings and to carry out
the specific and primary purposes of the corporation: to print, publish, sell, or otherwise distribute books, magazines
and pamphlets which its Board of Directors believe will promote its specific and primary purposes; to acquire and own any property of any kind and to use, manage, improve, pledge, mortgage, or convey by deed of trust and sell, exchange or transfer any property which it may acquire or of which it may be the owner; and to solicit and accept voluntary contributions of real and personal property of any kind; and in general to carry on any other activities which its Board of Directors believe will promote its specific and primary purposes.

Being a member of the Regional Council, whether as an elected Committee member or some other capacity, is a great opportunity to contribute to Subud and to expand your understanding of how Subud works in the world.
